Eating wood - Any suggestions as to why? Also getting snappy...

Heya,
My tegs housed on orchid bark which he has been fine with up to now (he was housed on it at the shop where I bought him as well) but the last couple of days when I have come home to check on him I have found him chewing a piece of bark. He doesnt seem to swallow any, but has it in the corner of his mouth and is busy gnawing it, though he drops it when I come in and leaves it alone.

Im obviously worried about impaction, but is there a foreseeable reason why he would be chewing it? Im concerned that maybe he has some kind of mouth problem, like mouth rot in beardies, that hes trying to alleviate; though what I have seen of his teeth and gums when feeding him looks fine. Could he possibly be bored or something? Is it more likely that some fruit or cricket gore might have got onto it and thats why hes nibbling at it? Like I said, I dont think hes eaten any, but its a bit disconcerting.

Problem number 2; over the last couple of days hes been trying to eat my fingers. In the past he wouldnt express much interest in my fingers other than a quick flick of the tongue, but now he tastes them a bit and then tries to eat them. He even follows my hand when I move it. I hand fed a few grapes a few days ago, but have never hand fed other foods as its a bit too dangerous for my liking I have tried this just after washing my hands as well in case I smelt of any of his foods, but he still tried it on.

Im trying to get him out of the habit by holding my hand on front of him again and then moving it to pet him so he learns its not a source of food. He doesnt try to bite, or even act aggressively when hes out of the cage, and it doesnt seem territorial; he just thinks my hand is food. Is there a way to break him of this habit? I would hate to eventually have to use gloves when Im working in his enclosure. I know I probably brought it on myself (damn those grapes!) but do you think he will break the habit? Anyone else had this problem?

Sorry its so long. Many thanks in advance.

Feed all food in a dish, and take the dish out to fill it. I have four identical dishes, so I give him the full one and while he's attending to that, I remove the old one. Just make sure to keep your fingers behind the bowl so if he lunges for it, you're out of range. I also always clean my hands with one of those antibacterial gels before going in the enclosure. If smells as little like food as anything I've found. I've never had a problem. Tegus are smart. Yours apparently learned fingers were a source of food in one try; he'll learn that they aren't food pretty quickly, too.

Good luck,
Leslie
