can 2 different species within the same subgenus be bred together?
So, my real question is:
Is it possible to have a V. exanthematicus X V. niloticus?
Or, is this just me sitting in my garage daydreaming?

I could imagine it'd be possible to breed the two together, the sex organs do not differ wildly between varanid species.. but between Niloticus and exanthematicus?
Either the eggs would all be unfertile.. or still born.
If anyone did have success, I doubt the offspring would be fertile.. and likely misformed..
But if it were possible.. that'd be quite a monster.
More of a display animal for the pattern, coloration, and size than a pet.. I'd bet it to have a niloticus personality with a savanna's approach to things.. which means blunt force and aggression.. but it could always be dog tame.. who knows.
