new breeder needs advice

geckoguy_ottawa Jun 29, 2003 12:20 AM

Hi guys,
Say if one of my females mates with a male at the beginning of the breeding season, is she good for the rest of the season. Or can I re-introduce her to a different male afterwards to have different babies. Basically what I'm asking is do they only need to mate once a season. If not when do you know to re-introduce her to the male. This is all new to me, that's why I come here for alot of answers. You guys are great.
Thanks

Hey,

I usually only leave my males in with the female(s) for 2 - 3 months, then I seperate them. I used to leave them together year round and was getting some very, very run down females because of it. But you can always do a rotated schedule of 3 days in and 3 - 4 days out. Mating isn't always seen, but more often then not, I've managed to see when it happens with my geckos. Hope this helps.

A leo only needs to mate once for the season, they can retain this one time mating for up to a year to produce eggs. If you mate with another male it will usually take a couple clutches before the new males sperm will take affect and fertilize the eggs. Hope this helps.

Hey,

If you are breeding for a certian color morph and want to know pretty sure what you're getting (can't be 100% sure all the time, this is nature) then I would suggest breeding only one male per season to your female. If you breed more than one male to the same female and get an outstanding looking baby, how do you know which one is the father? This will make it easy on yourself and help your future customers to know what they have.

Happy Breeding

Well, one mating can be sufficient, but I do not recommend trying to get the female gravid twice (8 eggs from one dad, 8 from another afterwards) because it is so stressful for them. My leo laid 5 clutches and dropped from 70 grams to 50 grams. Pick the male you want to be the father and leave her with him....don't go switching around.
