Herp medication Question

jwthought Oct 21, 2004 11:13 PM

I am currently giving a post operation veiled cham several medications perscribed by my vet. They are: a de-wormer for possible parasites, an anti-biotic, a pain killer, and a liquid calcium supplement. My question is, are these medications, namely the anti-biotic, able to be used on other herps? I dont know the exact name of the anti-biotic off hand, but I am wondering if I could use it on a leopard gecko and possibly a white's treefrog in the future if any trouble arises. I know that the dosages would vary from animal to animal depnding on the size, but are there different anti-biotics perscribed to different species of herps? I was told I can use the de-wormer on all the animals, and the anti-biotic is a creamy pink liquid, if that makes any difference. Thanks very much in advance.

It really depends on what medications you're talking about. If you can't remember the names offhand, ask your vet. Usually chelonians (turtles) are the ones that have more sensitivity to certain kinds of drugs than other herps, but this is a topic you should discuss with your vet.

I believe it is standard procedure with antibiotics to use up all the medication. Even though an animal appears to be better, all the virus has not been killed off. By not using all the doses it allows the virus that remains to develope an immunity to the antibiotic. Then it spreads again, only this time it will take a stronger antibiotic to get rid of. Check with your vet but I'm betting you are supposed to use up all the antibiotic. Even if you had a little left it would not be enough to run a full course on another animal.
