Do snakes get bored

ozmotorsport Oct 22, 2004 05:35 AM

Guys, I dont get much free time these days and my poor diamond just sits in his box looking lonely. He is well fed but my wife does not like to handle him.

Do they get bored? am I being cruel?

Box? What do you mean with Box? If your animal lives in a cage that provides enough space and something to climb then you are not cruel. Your snake can move und climb, what else could it do?

But if your snake is indeed living in a box, then your are cruel wheater you are at home or not.

Sorry, missunderstanding. To me a cage is something with bars. When something is 1500mm x 1000mm x 1000mm made from wood with a glass front to me thats is a box. I can assure you his living conditions are every comfortable with UV lights and themostaically controlled heat mats. He has plent of water, plenty of rocks and hide spots and a good view of my garage, just no contact with any other live vreateure (mice excluded) for a few days at a time.

I'm no snake expert, but I do think that it takes significant brain power for a creature to become bored. Humans get bored, maybe apes, dolphins or dogs get bored but I seriously doubt that snakes get bored. I think survival functions encompass all of the faculties of their brain.

I agree!
If there basic needs are satisfied, there is not one can do about the animals entertainment. I am not a big fan of handling. IMO i would consider frequently handling to be stress rather than entertainment.

sounds like he has a great enclosure. sometimes i will go days without doing anything with my snakes. my jungle carpet often goes a week between getting let out for some handling. i haven't seen her out and about the past few days, i wonder if she in shedding mode.
but i think i would be bored if all i had to look at would be a garage. i house mine in my bedroom. 'safari' will often hangout on her branches to see what's going on when she isn't in shed.
