Quack Vets

cricketscritters Oct 22, 2004 07:21 AM

Just have to vent a little. I recently sold a yellow beardie to a man for his teenage son. They did the right thing & took it to the vet for a check-up. The thing is, she told them that the bearded dragon had fatty liver disease. It was supposingly obvious from the yellow coloring. No blood work, no nothing. She put the poor thing on all types of unnecessary antibiotics & then it really did look sick. I told the man to discontinue all the medications and concentrate on rehydrating it.
How do we deal with vets like this? I bred this dragon to be yellow, and both of it's parents are the color of lemons.

thats awful! Was the vet they took their beardie to a certified herp vet? a lot of vets will treat reptiles even though they dont really have the training to do so, its wrong but it happens all the time. The only thing i can think to do is really stress to anyone who buys a beardie from you that they should take their herp to a vet who has training in that area, not just a "small animal vet"

This one is in Conover, NC. I've thought about scheduling an appointment with her to do a check-up on one of the yellow parents. But I'm afraid I'd end up in jail! But then again, it also could be a great opportunity to teach her something about color morphs.
And no, I don't think she's herp certified. I used her once 'bout 7 years ago to treat one of my first beardies. It died. But at that time, I didn't have much knowledge of reptiles either, except for basic care.
As for the beardie that I sold, I called the man earlier this morning. He said it's looking a lot better. I just can't believe that someone would make such a diagnosis without ANY tests.

That would be really funny if you took yours in to her...LOL How's the thinning out process going?

So far it's going pretty good. I'm going to the Greenville SC show next weekend. I'm hoping to sell all but one pair of my venomous snakes. I'm keeping my Brazilian Rainbow Boas, and my Desert Sand Vipers. All the others will be sold(hopefully).
I'll be set up in the non-venomous section. A friend of mine is going to handle the snakes for me in the other section. I'll have lots of beardies and lots of veiled chameleons on my table.
