That may not be a pure Black Rat Snake. The shape of the head looks a little off. If you look at the rostral scale, it looks like it is almost dividing the internasals. That is not normal for a Rat Snake. It also looks like it only has eight supralabials instead of the usual nine. It may be more than just a "not too often seen morph." Would need better pictures of the head to tell.

i took it for granted it was a pure black rat rusty.....should be a rusty with the chocolate color.......was sold to me by bob mcivor as such......

could this be a intergrade?

now you have me wondering

keith

P.S. I am not into intergrades at all.....

Whatever it is, it's a drop-dead beautiful animal! I'll take one, intergrade or not. Duffy

they should breed this season.....the male is well over 5 feet and the female jus shy......

i love them...

posted pics because i havent seen rustys on the forums in a long time

Would like to know more about the possibility of an intergrade...the animals were purchased from Bob Mcivor, and i believe they are George Miskimon's stock

i have his number....i may check into that today....

anyone have any other thoughts about it , help me shed some light on if it may be an intergrade?

Since I was the one who questioned what it was, let me say that I would need much better pictures to tell for sure. When I saw the shape of the head, it looked more like that of a King Snake to me. It is hard to tell from a picture. On the other hand, as Duffy said, it is one fine looking snake.

I breed rusties for a few yrs now. We had this debate before on the forum. I think there are pure I was told by a handfull of old herper that they were catching rusties in P.G county MD back in the late 70's and early 80's. What other colubrid morph or not is co- dominate ? Some has said there are cross with tx's I don't buy that. Only because every time I breed my rusties to normals I got rusties and normal [blk rats]. Bob breed a rusty to some w.c normal blk rat some yrs ago and hatched a batch of sweet rusties too.

If by chance rusties are a cross then with what ?

What two cross can produce a co -dominate morph?

Maybe Dwight or Dewey has some input

I have a book with a picture of a Yellow x Bull and the head shape looks like yours. That could be a cross between a Black Rat and a Black Pine Snake. I would need better pictures to do a scale count.

It is still a great looking snake.

i have a friend in PA that says theres naturally occuring black rats in his area.....get this....EXACTLY the same color and pattern as mine....

might be a local; issue more than an intergrade issue....

either way here is a pic of the male (not as close as the female)
