What would be wrong with,...

thesnakeman Oct 22, 2004 12:39 PM

feeding an occasional whole egg, {shell and all} to an Indigo? Provided that the egg is sized right. Iv'e had black rats that would eat a half dozen at a time. Just a thought.

I guess it should be ok if they would eat them.
I think a lot of times unless the egg still has the smell of the mother bird on it, snakes don't recogize it as a food source.
I did see photos on a German website of a large erebennus eating hen's eggs though.

There's always the salmonella issue, and most of the salmonella on hen's eggs is in the shell.

but...I think reptiles have a much higher tolerence than humans.
I would do it occasionally if mine would eat them. I have tried it in the past and my snakes gave them the same look as if I'd put a golf ball in the cage.

O.K., thanks Drini. Probably what I will do is keep my eyes open for a source of smaller eggs of some sort, like quail.

Can Indigos digest the eggshell, or do they regurgitate it.
Thanks
