How much to feed?

Oilfan94 May 15, 2003 08:53 AM

I'm planning on getting a young beardie at an up comming show. It will be my first. I already have just about everything it will need. I plan to feed it small crickets and/or silk worms at first. My question is this...How much or how many crickets should I be feeding a young or baby beardie? I know it depends on the age/size but I'd like to get a good idea of what experienced people do. How often should I feed it? I have read that babys should be fed three times a day and adults should be fed three times a week.

Any other tips for a soon-to-be first time beardie owner?

use your consent. make sure the crix are small. but only put a couple in there a day. if he/she eats them all up at once put a couple more. i let them eat untill they dont hunt the crix no more then i know about how much to feed them.

If there are under 3 months old.....feed them appropriate size crickets or silkworms....all they want in 10-15 minutes....at least 3 times a day if they are under 8 weeks and at least 2 times day thereafter until 6-8 months, then down to once a day. All the greens the want available all day to them......pellets as you want....some will eat them some won't. Have fun picking out your beardie at the show..........

An under 12 week old will eat at average of 20-30 crix per feeding..... or probably about 15-20 small silkworms.....they might eat a few less, and they might eat more.....most of mine have fallen in that range though I do have quite a few that eat 40-50 per sitting or 25-30 silkies.....

I have a 66 gal tank set up for him/her but I'm thinking of using a smaller tank for feeding crickets. This way it won't have to chase the crickets all over the place and I won't have trouble rounding up any uneaten little buggers. Is this a good idea or is there a simple method to this?

A seperate feeding tank is a great idea! Keeps the bug mess out of your enclosure and you don't waste time cleaning the left over bugs out before light out. Let us know how it goes! Good luck......What show are you going to?

Thanks,
I'm going to the TARAS show in Calgary, Alberta. It's supposed to the biggest reptile show in Western Canada. I hope to find a beardie there. I'm looking for a nice red one or possible one with a nice yellow pigment. I'll be sure to post pics and more questions.

...don't get discouraged if he/she doesn't seem interested in the greens (or pellets) at first. Some beardies will start eating the greens right away, while others will take a little while longer. Just keep putting them in there every day and one day they will disappear.

Goodluck w/your soon to be new family member!

if you dont feed in a seperate container be sure to remove any uneaten crickets as they will chew on your dragon if left in their enclosure. Good luck with your new beardie! =)
