Is it legal to release a captive bred snake? even if it is a native species?
I live by the Madronna marsh and I have heard that people dump unwanted iguanas there (which is not cool), but I don't know about snakes. What do your pacifics look like?
Can a snake who has been in captivity all its life survive in the wild on its own? I am thinking about how mammals and birds that have been taken care of for too long cannot be released because they don't know how to survive anymore on their own.
I have a kingsnake who acts like he would be happy to go away from me and I have been tempted a few times, but I don't think I have the nerve to let him go. (We call him "Hershey Squirt" because he loves to fling poo!) I know this is a pine/bull/gopher forum, but I'll show you my little devil, Hershey Squirt.

no no no. I would definately not ever release a captive animal into the wild. its not fair on the animals, ever.

I don't know about Cal. but many states have laws to keep you from releasing any animal that has been kept in captivity for certain periods of time or born in captivity because they may carry disease that they are immune to but not the wild population I know there was a big problem with desert tortoises that where re-released into the population spreding diseases and doing more harm than good. I wouldn't recomend it even if it was legal because of that reason.

im not sure how you get them and you have to be in re-habilitation programs etc..... lots of rules. its not good to release that king in madrona. i live in torrance and visit madronna all the time, and although their king population is lingering, it does worse to release captive animals. hey, if you wanna email me, mebbe if you want some of my pac. gopher babies... or i could trade some 4 your kingsnake if you really wanna get rid of him. just a though. my emails junior_herper@yahoo.com

I think I was misunderstood. I would never let my kingsnake (or any of my snakes) loose. I was really making a comment on his temperment being so yucky because he always craps on me that I think about it sometimes (he tempts me). I wouldn't actually release him like that.
The original post was asking about how to get rid of extra snakes, I thought that person was implying that he/she would release the extra pacific gophers in the marsh. Maybe I misunderstood the original post.

My suggestion is to call local schools in your area. I'm sure that there are elementary and secondary science classrooms would love a gopher snake--with budget cuts, classroom animals are a luxury item on the requisition list, and many teachers buy their own. With a donated animal, those who want it would gladly feed and house it. I've done this with corns from time to time with success. Just a thought. . .

althea

Why don't you just place a "Free for cost of shipping" ad in the classifieds?

mattcbiker Oct 27, 2004 02:32 PM

Well, if you're shipping it, you won't need to give out your address, but I don't see why that'd be a problem when selling a reptile. - Matt

It's a problem if he is a minor and he is smart about giving out personal info on the internet

caring for them, that being the reason i posted in this forum. I dont know the laws about shipping local herps, even though they are local captive bred, so if one of you guys would like them, you could email me specific information on how the deal would be conducted. thank you, nick.

they are just out of their first shed now.
