Buying a Friend for my Tegu?

CornSnakeBabe Oct 22, 2004 07:07 PM

I have a juvenile male Argentine B&W. I was wondering if introducing a new tegu of roughly the same size to the enclusure is a good idea. Is it?

Am I limited to a female or is a male OK? What other precautions should I take? If I do buy a friend for my tegu, what is the best way to introduce them? (I don't want to breed tegus!)

It is not a good idea to introduce someone new at this stage of your tegus life. At least in my experience it isn't. If you got a male they would fight. If you got a female it would ok for a little while until they began to breed (and they can breed as young as 9 months!!), and then the male would have his way with her, but when she didn't want to anymore, he'd beat her up, and might not let her feed. That is what has happend to me in the past when keeping a male and female together. If you had a HUGE cage set-up with lots of hiding spots it might work.

I think it really depends on how agressive your tegu is. I have a red and a blue, both of which are not agressive at all. They don't even mind when my beardie hangs out in their cage.
