Horned Lizard Diets

bast May 15, 2003 08:56 AM

Hello,

I have some large (6X25 ft.) outdoor reptile pens. They are cemetent walled and covered in 1/2 inch hardware cloth/mesh. It is furnished with logs, rock piles, natural vegetation, mulch and dirt areas. There is plenty of sun.

I am going to try to breed Russian tortoises in them. There are lots of ants in the enclosures and will probably be more when I start feeding the tortoises.

I am in southeastern MA and I am going to try to overwinter my torts outdoors. They should take our winters easily. I'd like to try adding a couple horned lizards to the tort pen.

MY QUESTIONS:
Which horned lizards can take a southern New England winter?
Can they eat any ants or just certain species?

Thank you,

Brian

Hi Brian,
Your right p.hernandezi would be the only species that can tolerate the cold that far north. Too much moisture could also be a problem. You might give it a try.Jeff
