Outdoor carpeting as substrate

charky2002 Oct 22, 2004 09:30 PM

I've seen a few people recommend that indoor/outdoor carpeting as a substrate but the petstore told me that there is some sort of toxin that will kill reptiles. Has anyone else heard anything about this. I was considering using it for my snakes. If anyone could shed some light on this i'd really appreciate. Thanks in advance

Petshops by my house use this themselves, and i've used it before for my iguanas and never had a problem. The petshop probably just wants you to buy their rediculous priced products.

It's true that some outdoor carpetings have treatments on them and can give chemical burns to your reptiles or offgas fumes that could cause respiratory problems or death. Some of the treatments include stain blockers, flame retardants, UV blockers to prevent fading and mildewcides.

I think we should all go out and burn down all the pet shops for charging such ridiculous prices and offering safe products for our reptiles. After all who needs them in this day and age of Wally World and the internet.

Hope this helps.

I currently use the stuff and it holds onto smells once they've used it, i don't like newspaper cause i like to display my reptiles so i use bed a beast, it holds moisture and is easy to clean up after. When that is used up i will switch to that fir forest bark stuff, cypress mulch.

Go to a landscape supply center and buy some cypres mulch.

I use that expanding substrate like bed-a-beast for my reptiles that need high humidity. I was thinking about the carpeting because i'm making some cages with sliding glass fronts and the loose substrate gets caught in the tracks. I won't spend that much on true reptile carpeting but by the sounds of it if I find some of that untreated stuff I should be ok. Thanks for all your help everyone . I really wanted to get cypress mulch for my tegu but I can't find it anywhere.

You might be able to find cypress mulch at a shop that specializes in herps.
Thats where I found mine.
Here in the northeast, cypress is not a big item. Most mulches here are cedar.
I finally found bulk cypress at a petshop, and it was garden quality mulch. Not extra fine, lots of large pieces, and sticks.
I searched all outdoor, farm and garden shops for a long time and came up empty.
