Big Skink?

sams43 Oct 22, 2004 10:21 PM

What is the biggest skink you can buy in the pet trade?? i am looking for a some-what big lizard and i am deciding between a skink and some kind of dwarf monitor, probably an ackie. also if you could tell me some info or give me a website where i could find info on this big skink it would be highly appreciated.

thanks

I think what pacman was reffering to was Prehensile-Tailed Skinks. They are great animals, but they are not for everyone. They require very specific temps, humidity, foods, etc. I would reccomend something like a Blue-Tounged Skink, a trib, Pink-Tounge, etc. jrbl

I would have to second jrbl comment on the Prehensile-Tailed Skinks as a choice.. there not for everyone.. First off the getting harder and harder to find, and captive breeding efforts need to be made..So if you want a pet just for that reason.. I would stick to a Blue Tounged there pretty bullet proof and they have great pesonality.. for a nice display lizard then go with a tribs....and Finally Pink tounges are great, but i have hear reports that some can be picky eaters.. unless you have friends with snails..

But in the end the choice will be yours, Prehensile-Tailed Skinks are great i have six of them and I am always looking for more... I love when their little fishhook like claws dig into my skin, but hey they have great personality...except went gravid...

Why are you looking specifically for large lizards, as opposed to say, lizards with good "personality" or specific care requirements?

Well that is true. i am looking for a large lizaed with a good personality. i am looking into getting a monitor but i heard skinks have good personalities so i was just curious about the size in which skinks got. personality was the first thing that i am looking for.

Well if you are looking for personality then why are the 2 lizards you're looking into so different in personality?

If you go with an ackie your gonna get a really neat lizard that is super duper hyperactive, while in most cases BTSs and PTSs are calm and mellow. I'd go with a BTS but of course I'm biased. I've always wanted a PTS but from my research I would deffs go with BTS as a first.

first let me say that all of your skinks are beautiful. what kind of skink is the one to the far left. how big is it? i have really been reading about bts and they sound like a great pet. is it true that they can get up to 24 inches long? and i am looking for a lizard w/ a friendly personality i really dont care if the are hiper or if they are mellow. i would like a lizard that is person freindly.

Size depends on species. Check here for more info: http://bluetongueskinks.net/blue.htm

The one on the far left is an Indonesian, the two in the middle are Irian Jayas and the far right baby is a Tanimbar.

thank you so much!! that website was awesome. it has so much info!! i have a couple questions about skinks though? i know they are really mellow creatures but are they lazy. i mean are they active during the day or do they just like sit in the sun and bask.??

Tigergenesis Oct 28, 2004 04:10 PM

When I get home and take my bluey out to explore my room she is generally pretty active. Sometimes she's a little speed demon! I don't blame her after being in her cage all day. But as with any animal they each have their differences.

I'm a little biased, but I say a bluey. Check out the forum at that link I gave you and read some of the posts about our crazy blueys. That may help sway you.
