Fungus - how to treat and prevent?

Tuttley Oct 23, 2004 05:05 AM

Hey there, only been in this game for 6 months or so, looking for advice please.

I have two young eastern longneck turtles, and one has the tiniest startings of fungus on her "shoulder". I have started to treat this by painting the affected area with an iodine solution, then leaving her out of the water for an hour or so afterwards (doing this once a day at the moment).

Only discovered it this morning - I have 2 questions:

1.Any suggested alterations to my treatment?
2.Is there likely something wrong in my setup/husbandry that would predispose her to this?

Current setup is 2ft tank 120litre(30gallon). 2/3 full of water, suspended rock platform. Full spectrum repti-glo uv lighting, heatlamp over basking area. Water is heated to 22C (71F). Good strong canister filter is being used, i feed them in a separate container, and make sure the tank is kept clean. In this setup i have 2 young eastern longnecks (approx 6-7cm or 3inch), that seem to be thriving

Thanks in advance for any advice.

You are on the right course, but I would leave it out of water most of the time with only one or two immersions a day. If you are an Aussie, you may not have access to my favorite fungus treatment which is Fungus Cure by Marine Phameceuticals, available at most fish stores in the U.S. Treat as recommended for fish BUT first be sure this is fungus and not a bacterial infection. Fugus is very superficial and rubs off easily. It is white to cream colored in appearance. If it is bacterial (SCUD) you will need injectable antibiotics.

Thanks for replying. I will start leaving her out for longer. Yes i am in aus, but the Marine Pharmaceuticals range has just started popping up in the last couple of months. I will go and see if they are stocking fungus cure.

Thanks for taking the time to respond and share your knowledge
