I had her put down...

maize_n_olivia Oct 23, 2004 11:21 AM

hey I posted that question a while back about my little female leo who wasn't eating.

Well, after trying everything, taking legs of crickets, mealworms, waxworms, silkworms, bloodworms, mashing stuff up and feeding it to her on a little plate, force feeding...

I decided I needed to take her to the vet.

I have an excellent reptile vet, highly recommended in eastern canada (dr. benoit)...and with his help, I came to the conclusion that it would probably be best to have her put down.

She weighed a little under 2 grams, there was nothing that he could see that was wrong with her, but due to her size, he couldn't take blood because it's just too difficult to take 0.02 cc's of blood.

She was the last of her clutch to hatch, and was the weakest, I guess that's what I get for taking pity on the little guy.

I miss her a lot, and I feel terrible knowing that she suffered, I guess I just want someone to tell me that I made the right decision... was there something else I could have done???

Lesson to reptile lovers everywhere: resist temptation to take the little runty "won't someone help me please" one in the group...it only leads to heartbreak

I'm so sorry you had to go through that. You did the right thing though. Just be happy you still have your other leos and that they are happy and healthy.

You did that right thing, don't worry.. Sometimes we have to make heart breaking decisions when we own animals and this is one of them.. I hope you don't blame yourself because you've done everything you could. I'm sure it took alot of courage to help the little gecko die, so I view you as very brave. Were all here for you after your loss as well. Take care.

R.I.P. little gecko.
