House gecko diets

housegecki Jun 29, 2003 05:46 AM

Arggh! I can't seem to find anywhere that sells crickets in singapore!! Can I use mealworms as a staple food for my Asian Flat tail House gecko?? Also, is a Yakult bottle big enough for a hiding area (lol)???? Im a starter, and are vitamin dustings nescessary? I can't seem to find them either. Lastly, do I need a heating lamp when I'm living in a country which already has normal gecko temperatures?? I can live without air-con.

Yes, they will be fine. Try to use the white ones which just molted and are therefore easier to digest. Also, temps should be fine without a heat lamp.

Lol! I'll try. But would I catch enough?? Probably not....

Get a small butterfly net, and duck outside at night. Look around outdoor lights and catch small moths and other insects that gather there--you should get plenty.
You MIGHT also be able to find some mealworms in a pet store, if not crickets--if you can get some, you can raise your own easily. Also, if you luck out and find flour infested with flour moths, you're all set--raise those. The larvae and adult moths can be fed to the lizards.

Thanks! I shall try that. With the pet store thing, *starts whispering* I don't think i'll have any luck because reptiles arent aloud in singapore...

Perhaps not, but some finch breeders feed mealworms to their breeding birds. So you may be able to find them if you really inquire around.

Yet another good idea from WingedWolf. I will scour each pet shop.
