Cal king genetics

FireDrake Oct 23, 2004 05:11 PM

I have asked about this here a couple times with no replies, here goes again!
I would like to learn more about cal king genetics, how are patterns and colors inherited?? What exactly is lavender? Is there albino desert phase and albino coastal phase, or is it just plain albino? Is there a website that can tell me these things?

Thanks

Ok, here goes nothing. Patterns and colors are just like blonde hair and blue eyes. They tend to be inherited by parental genes and such.....unless the colors are subject to recessive genes.....albinism, axanthic, hypomelanistic, hypoerythristic, you get the picture.

There are 2 strains of lavender albino cal kings, and these DO NOT include normal amels. The JD strain and the JR strain, are incompatible lavender amels in cal kings. I'm not certain which is which, but one is purple lavender and one is pink lavender. Sometimes these are labeled as T albinos. These tend to hold onto a pink or purplish color as adults, where normal amels will be white.

As for the amels, yes there is amel desert phase and amel coastal phase. I would assume though, that the desert phase amel was derived from outcrossing nice black and white animals to amel coastals to get the pink and white albino deserts. I say this because some amel black and white animals tend to become more and more yellow with age.

I hope this helps.

Ive been told that the yellow coastal coloration and striped pattern are dominant to white color and banded. There are at least two albino morphs (as stated) and there are melanistics which look like a black and brown. When you have an albino and melanistic showing, you get a blizzard. I havent breed these so I dont know from experience but that is what Ive learned from others on the board.
