Don't tell me I Wasted my money?!?

rob1217r Oct 23, 2004 05:49 PM

I recently bought a very large 125 Gal aquarium type enclosure for my ball. I just read a post about conatining Ball pythons and some people said aquariums aren't good enclosures. Is an aquarium a bad enclosure to have a ball in, and if so how come? I'm not gonna go and throw my aquarium away or anything, but in the fututre, if there are better enclosures, I might go with those instead of aquariums.

I could see if you were breeding and didn't want 100 30 gal aquariums sitting in your house, but if I only have one (maybe two in the future) then is an aquarium bad?

Comments or advice from anyone who knows?

and here is why...africa is not too big for a snake. It is bad for you to clean and maintain conditions and that is all. You also need to offer hides for security where a smaller tank almost does that for you. You have a lot of potential for the nicest ball python setup anyone in the world has with a 125 gal tank. About the size of my green female anaconda's actually.

Fhew! Thank you. I was starting to doubt my good intentions. I knew that a 125 gal tank was very large for just one Ball Python, but I thought that it would give her more room because in her 30 Gal she was constantly trying to get out. It would make me feel terrible because she was always trying to get out. She would test the edges of the screen top and rub her nose against it, it actually made her nose turn white.

Thank you for the reply!

I agree with the other post. Although aquariums are probably not the best choice, they were at one time the only cage used when keeping bp's. My 35 year old has spent most of his life in a glass tank and he did just fine. Just make sure that whatever top you use is secure and built to withstand the occasional break out attempts of your bp....DON'T USE WEIGHTED OBJECTS TO HOLD IT DOWN. There are some advantages to glass tanks so don't be so quick to let others tell you to throw them away (now if you were keeping a burm in a glass tank, I would probably be giving you a lecture). Glass tanks are good because you can view your snake but trying to clean a 125 gallon tank is a pain in the but. i have a salt water 125 tank and i cant immagine what it would be like trying to clean that sucker for a snake. lol. I like to be able to take my cages outside to clean and a 6 foot long heavy as hell tank would be impossible.

I appreciate the input!! Yeah, cleaning this tank is quite a bit more of a hassle than the old one, but it's worth it when I can watch her go from her branch to her basking area and not watch her try consistantly to get out.

Thanks again for the replies

I have one 20 gallon tank (with screen top and clips) sitting upon my Jason's Jungle Rack. I'm currently not using it, but I've often thought of displaying one of my best babies.

Would love to see the setup for your bp. Sounds great.

It's really not much. I want to get more stuff to put in it like a background, and vines and stuff.
