Can course vermiculite cause impaction?

karaslittleyoshi Oct 23, 2004 09:35 PM

I have a juvi. gecko and I just bought vermiculite to place in in his hide box. I was told this was the best to have to provide humidity however the grains are small and I'm afraid he can eat it. DO you think he will eat it. If so is it harmful and will it cause impaction. Any idea?

They will eat it and yes it could cause impaction. I would change it to a moss of some kind. I use paper towels but it is hard to keep them moist unless I spray it everyday which kinda gets tiring.

I too have tried the paper towels and Yoshi loves to lay on them but they dry so quickly. What kind of moss would you suggest.

I agree about the paper towels. They do dry super quick. You can use Peat Moss or some people use perlite.

Perlite is for incubation, not humid hides or lay boxes. Sphagnum peat moss or Bed-a-Beast (same thing as Eco-Earth) is more ideal for humid hides.
