Size of wild American Alligators

radwigs Oct 23, 2004 09:38 PM

So how big can wild American alligators get, or more importantly how big do they get these days? I have a picture of a monster from Brazos Bend State Park in Texas and I would just love a realistic estimate of how big it is. I only have an old fashioned 35mm camera and no scanner so I need to get the pics converted to digital somehow. I think it is probably 13-14 feet. Do they really get that big anymore? I'll get the pics in here as soon as possible. I know they will help all of you help me with the estimate. Brazo Bend is a great place to see gators if you are in the South east Texas area ever, lots of snakes too. I will have to post a pic of an idiot there who was holding a snake he couldn't identify.

From www.Crocodilian.com -
"Adults males typically reach 4 to 4.5 metres (approximately 13 to 14.7 feet), although there are several unconfirmed reports of larger 5 m (approx 16.4 feet) and even 6 m adults (19.8 feet is the largest "reported", though there are doubts over its veracity) having been found or killed in the 19th and 20th centuries. Such sizes seem unlikely for this species. Females reach lengths of just under 3 m (approx 9.8 feet). ....."

they are among the very few who get a chance to put a tape measure on a large wild gator.
