Could someone explain what up with this forum....

Scott_Sullivan Jun 29, 2003 08:51 AM

Hello all, I'm an occasional visitor here at the forum and keep seeing a large dis-like of H E Stoeckl. I was curious at what the history of past posts to see where this was all coming from. I checked out the archived boa forum and could only go back a small ways to earlier this year. I couldn't find any posts by him that I found offensive. If anything I found his posts to be very informative. From what I can tell so far, he strongly feels that the crossing of different boas shouldn't be happening. Personally I have no problem with them being crossed as long as they are represented as such. I also have no problem with his viewpoint. He feels strongly about his viewpoint and I see nothing wrong with someone feeling strongly about what they feel is right. If anything I feel it's a good thing that their are some people that want to keep some bloodlines pure. Personally I have a "To each his own" attitude. I didn't decide to make this post so it could be an all-out war between the two sides. I'm just trying to figure out what's going on. If anyone could give me some insight on this I'd appreciate it. Take care, Scott.

>>>> Personally I have a "To each his own" attitude.

The problem is that such an attitude is exactly what Hermann lacks. He has posted comments here that imply morph breeders are moral degenerates. No morph breeders have ever suggested there is anything wrong with locality breeding.

Moreover, any validity his comments have is far outweighed by the fact that he posts them over and over and over and over and over, like a broken record. It's tiresome.

I'm a locality fan myself, with no interests in morphs whatsoever, but I find him annoying and more than a little embarassing to other locality breeders.

In my heart of hearts.........I am sure that Hermann is a really good guy. I am sure I could sit down with him and have a few beers and have a good time. We could even discuss our views I am sure. I am also sure that neither one of us would change each other's mind. He is a strong minded German......I am a block headed Norweigen. A bad combo right off the bat. LOL!

I have always said that I respect his views even though I don't agree with them. I don't agree with a lot of his theories/"feelings" on things most of the time. That's ok as well.
MY BIGGEST PROBLEM is this. People share their animals that they care for and Hermann will usually make a rude remark about them being a cross or a mutt. Even when he pays someone a compliment....It is ususally "tainted" (IMHO) with a negative comment attached to it. That just drives me CRAZY!!! I find it to be very rude and not necessary.

Again, I have always said I think his extreme views are good in the hobby. I feel they do have their place. I just don't think that he should think he's "king ding a' ling" while the others are ruining the hobby.

I ususally agree that we disagree with one another....The only real time that I voice my "opinions" is when I think he is being rude twords others that are sharing their pride and joy.

I have been coming to this forum for a few years and I am completely in agreement with your post. Herman likes to debate
and agressively and combatively argue his opinions and
viewpoints. He has a good sense of humor.

What I see time and time again, is that people (read - breeders trying to find a way to make more money)respond to him by
attacking him personally, with absolutely no sense of humor and
with an annoying hyper-sensitive attitude.
There is someone on here that gets 'offended' everytime the word
'mutt' gets used. Really, I'm not exagerating here.

He definately has 'THE BEST' website on Boas on the internet. I
think that basically the problem is that not everyone can
intelligently debate, disagree and argue without becoming petty
and getting personal. There is obviously a huge difference
between a boa/reptile hobbyist and someone who wants to be a
millionaire ASAFP by interbreeding boas. I'm a curious person
and I do like to see what the offspring are going to turn out
like sometimes, but there is a difference between doing
something to see if it can be done, and doing it purely so that
a much higher price can be charged when selling the offspring.

Thanks,
tc

Hello again, thanks for your responses. One of the problems with this form of communication is it's often hard to get a true feeling for some messages. Your not their to see the persons attitude during the posts. This can lead to alot of mis-understanding on these forums (and all forums, regardless of theme.) Personally I like a strong minded (and blockheaded attitude. I'd rather get straight to the point of how someone feels than beat around the bush. One of the reasons I like these forums is the diverse ideas among the members. I also enjoy a good discussion (arguement?). I don't like when it turns to name calling and getting personal. We all must remember that it's just a forum for free discussion, nothing more, nothing less. I'm appreciative of all the memebers experienced in caring for these animals and answering questions for people less experienced. I know about 12 years ago when I met my wife and she owned snakes, there was nothing like this for information (or at least we didn't know about it if there was) and it was more guesswork when it came to care for her ball python and rock python (what a vicious animal). I know we had never heard of not feeding your snakes live feeders (and she would literally sit and scream watching the rat crawl over her ball). I always say that why she married me, so she had a permanent snake feeder, LOL. Anyway, I'm getting off-topic here. I would just like to see everyone show each other a little respect and I'm sure it would go a long way. Take care, Scott Sullivan.
