"breeding" to soon???

gmagecko Oct 24, 2004 12:35 AM

we have 2 leo's who are almost 4 months now.We just moved them into a 30 gal tank and they are eating and pooping well. They are as of now "unsexed" we think it a male and a female. We will be posting photos for some experienced opinions soon.(its tough to get them to "strike the pose" A little bashfull I guess!)
we have noticed a sudden desire to "cuddle" or "wrestle" as my kids put it!Lots of tails wrapping and on top of each other in the humid hide. Its not aggerssive,no one has been injured and they are acting normal otherwise.Isnt it to soon for this kind of stuff??? should we seperate them?? they are 27 and 28.4 grams and while I dont mind if they breed...I didnt expect they would try so young...can they "play" at this age and not get knocked up or is it solitary for the little guy!

As Leopardgeckoman said, you better seperate them immediatly.. breeding this young can be fatal-- Laying eggs takes so much away from the female and she's too tiny to even successfully lay them, let alone lay fertile ones. I really hope they haven't successfully bred... Wait until the male is 10 months at least and the female 12 months, at least. The female should weigh at least 60 grams, but I'd recommend a little more maybe. Good luck, keep us posted..

I would seperate them just in case. Leos shouldn't breed until the female is about 50g and the male is about 9-10 months old. If they have already bred then I would keep an eye on the female. Her being that small is a big risk for her becoming egg bound. Thas would require a vet bill. After they have bred once she will lay about 12 eggs (maybe more, maybe less). Still You need to seperate them. Even when they get big enough to breed and such I would keep them seperated because they males have a tendency to stress the females because they are constantly trying to breed. Hope this helps

Do you mean she will lay 12 eggs in her life, or 12 eggs at once. Because if im not mistaken they only lay 2 eggs per pregnancy.

Sorry bout that. I meant if a female breeds once she will lay a total of 12 eggs. They lay about two every month.

oh ok thanks, one question though. If i use a punit square. for instance my male has mm (midnight blizzard) and my female has NN (both normal traits). so the babies will all be normal but het for blizzard. If she lays all 12 eggs they will all turn out like this correct? But my question is how would i ever get double het? I havnt taken any college corses on this subject. all i have is 8th grade biology where my teacher spent a lot of time on traits, punit squares, and other things like that.

Also, if i bread a female from that clutch to my male, i will get 6 midnight blizzards and 6 normals het for blizzard, or will this be considered double het? If it is considered double het, just say so and you dont have to explain it because i think i got it figured out.

Thanks for your replys.
