nogard Oct 24, 2004 01:34 AM

Again I have another question on hibernation, I caught my tegu basking and decided to feed him and he ate close to forty medium cickets and two pinkies, is that normal after he has been less active and staying hidden constantly for the past 2 weeks, Should i just keep going as I am

thanks and sorry again

I have read where you have to be careful about feeding them when they become less active. You will need to keep the temps up for your tegu. The problem is if they hibernate with a stomach full of food at low temps the food can end up rotting in their stomach and kill then. My B&W has significantly reduced his activities he hardly comes out of his room and I rarely see him basking. When he is out I am only feeding him small amounts of fruit.

If they will eat, feed them, but as long as they are eating keep all basking spots on. If he keeps coming out, continue to feed and go from there. Don't worry if they stop eating though.
