Do Bullsnakes become tame?

scubagecko Oct 24, 2004 03:58 AM

I haven't seen a Bullsnake in person before. Do they become tame? How much do they usually cost?

Most individuals become very tame. The cost depends on localty, but most are $20-$40 or so.

Hey scuba,
The answer to your first question is: yes and no!!!!! 98% will become tame with lots and lots of handling. In my collection I have some who will tag me every time I mess with them or their cage. Then I have some that never show any signs of aggression. Then there are those in between. I have a female ghost that has never bitten me when I deal with her with no one else in the room. Everytime I have someone else in the snake room, however, she will tag me if I give her a chance. Of course that is what I like about Pits, their personalities are so varied. Of Gophers, Pines and Bulls, as far as being tame is concerned, I've had the least problems with Northern Pines and Black pines.
As to cost, you can spend $20 for a generic Bull up to $300 for a breeder size Hypo. Check out the classifieds. Shannon Brown had a list a few days ago. The Crawl Space had some offerings the past couple of days. John Cherry always has good stock available (although I have not heard from him in a couple of months! Hope everything is OK John???) If Shannon, Ron or John don't have anything they surely know who does. Good Luck.

Pat
P.S.--Just thought of something. I've never dealt with them but others have and are high on Exotic Pets out of Vegas. They have some San Diego Gophers and Sonoran gophers in the classifieds. They may have a Bull or two around also. Have fun!!!

John's ok, just got an email from him tonight :] He's a great guy to deal with. He sent me pics of the bulls he has right now. He has some possible hets for 40 and some definite hets for 45
and as far as the crawl space, I've met Ron in person and saw a lot of his animals, great guy, amazing snakes. I got my first bull from him last January.
As far as a 20 dollar bull snake, I've never seen one, I must be looking in the wrong place, lol. cheapest one I ever saw was 40

I have yet to see a regular(usually from texas) bullsnake that cost more than $25. But then I dont really look for them.

I purchased a Snow bull from Suncoast herpetological at the August Daytona show. I paid 100 dollars for him (neonate) and I have to say he is the most laid back baby snake I have ever seen. He never even bluffs or hisses (yet) but I have seen him rattle his tail once. That was cool. Picked him up while he was rattling and he did nothing. I think the key is-when you bring a new snake home-have it's home all ready and LEAVE IT ALONE for 3 days or so. They need that. I am sure you can get a "normal" for 30 dollars or so.
