I am not sure whether mums are inherently edible or not... However, flowers that are storebought, uncluding in pots from nurseries should never be fed since they are usually laced with fertilizers and other chemicals, and there is no way to know what has been used on the plants. You can buy storebought plants but they should be grown for a minimum of a year before feeding from them, the fda requires organic methods of growing food products to be in place for 3 years, before anything can be certified organic. Just as a point of reference.
I believe mums are known for being very bitter, it is why deer and other animals tend to leave them alone. My guess is that they are not an ideal food supplement for the Uros, but that is just my guess.

Mums are toxic and commonly used to make organic insectixides. I'm not sure if they are toxic to "higher" animals but they do in insects.
