Fruit fly question...

pweaver Oct 24, 2004 12:17 PM

I have some baby chams that I'm keeping in a 10g aquarium. I just recently bought some flighless fruit flies for the chams. When I put a bunch into the aquarium, they all immediately start crawling up the glass and then go right out the top. I tried a 1" strip of vaseline around the top but that didn't help. Any ideas on how to keep them in the aquarium?

put a piece of fruit like an orenge peel or an apple inside the cage, they should all (mostly) fly around that and ur cham can zap 'em

It’s also better to have the fruit sit out a day first. The flies are more attracted to over ripe fruit as opposed to fresh. Don’t let it get moldy either.

Another tip is to get some wooden skewers, stick the fruit on the pointy end then put it in a potted plant or something so that the height is near to the general area that the chams hang out in. So long as you supply them fruit they will stay. At night you may want to put a piece of plastic or a towel over it to keep the flies from wandering. You can get finer mesh screens that they can't (usually) get out of.

i stretch nylon over the screen and tie the legs and cut it for my babies. It works great. They cant get out, sometimes they hang out at the top, but my babies will use their tongues to get them, or the flies come back down. I just slip the cover on after i feed them, then slip it off later.
