Digesting eggshells?

jonasgn Oct 24, 2004 04:29 PM

Hello i was just wondering if Indigos and Cribos can digest eggshells or do they regurgitate them.
I will hopefully get a Indigo soon, and i want to find out as much as i can before that.
Thanks a lot
Jonas

I don't really have an answer to your question. I'm just guessing that you are considering using eggs as part of the indigos diet.

Unless you have access to really small eggs, a typical chicken egg will probably be a pretty big meal for all but a big male.

I'd be interested if anyone on this forum has ever fed eggs to an indigo.

i offered hen eggs back in the day but my drys would basically act unimpressed looking on for something easier to swallow w/ a little more meat on it. my bulls used to get eggs of all types including chicken eggs [from a farm] but i have discontinued that practice. robin eggs, etc. were never be seen again, chicken egg shells would get spit out intact later w/ all contents absorbed.....

All of my couperi, erebennus and rubidus will accept quail eggs whenever offered, while my corais, melanurus and unicolor cribos act interested in eggs, though have yet to accept them.
Also, the egg shells are digested and not regurgitated by the Drys.

Hey Jeff,

I can hardly imagine indigo feces being worse than it is now, but I suspect it might just be when it's from a digested egg. Any observations on that?

Hello Doug,

Feces get a bit messy, but still not as bad as after a meal of trout!
It becomes a bit runny, but the smell is typical and I have not noticed any pieces of eggshell within the feces, so I’m guessing it is well digested.
The only difference, I have noticed, is that they seem to bask longer than usual after consuming eggs.
