Hi there,

Congrats on getting your girl breeding. You are a long way from being done though. Given your temps are right, etc you should not expect eggs until at least early spring. Keep putting them together once or twice a week for a few days all through winter to March. They will keey breeding and she will eventually develop follicles. In the spring, hopefully, the folicles will mature to bigger than golf balls and she will ovulate. Then you will have another two weeks to a month before she sheds. After she sheds you have about 30 more days until she lays. Basically this is a six or seven month process that you just started - but the good news is you are off to a great start! Be sure your temps are right and keep on doing exactly what you are doing!

If your girl had folicles at the time the 2 were introduced, you could see eggs in a month.

We breed ours when the females have folicles and they usually lay within 60-90 days after humping.

basically like a dog going into heat or something like that...the females ovaries start to develop and that is the best time for fertilization. If the follicles are fertilized they will form into eggs....if not the females will normally reabsorb the follicles until the next year.

You palpate the female and if she has developing follicles you can feel them inside of her body. To palpate you basically feel along their underside and the follicles should be a little more than halfway down the snake closer to the tail side. Some females are extremely hard to palpate....others are very easy...but once they are get bigger...there is pretty much no mistaking them.....

you can palpate them but until that point you have to use an ultrasound. I was told that some of the large breeders will use an ultrasound so they can pick up on the follicle growth early and start breeding. It was recommended to me that you let the snake crawl across your fingers and firmly but still gently press into the posterior of the snake with your index finger. As was said in the previous post you should feel them a little more than half way down the snake. If you try to grab the snake and feel, it will normally tighten up it's abdominal muscles and you won't feel anything, this is why I was told to let the snake crawl naturally.

Hi there,

If you breed your girl when she has follicles, even if she ovulates the next day, you still have 45-60 days until eggs.

Thanks, Christy

Typically, ovulation happens then in 2-4 weeks they shed out (pre-lay shed) and then they lay 30 days after they shed.

Luke9815 Oct 25, 2004 04:34 PM

They normally lay about 30 days after ovulation...then if incubation temps are good...you should expect babies in about 55 days....

Luke you mean they shed in a month and then lay 55 days after ovulation, I think

Read his post then mine, nowhere did I say she will lay a month after being bred.....He said they were locked up 30 days ago, he then asked whats the soonest he could see eggs. I said he could see them in a month, which IS the case.

Hi there,

Yep, you are right technically, sorry! But, for eggs in a month, his girl would have had to immediately ovulate after that one short breeding session, meaning this is her prelay shed. So, she would have not only had to have follicles they would have had to be huge and completely ready to go.

My guess is that no way did she have huge follicles this early in the breeding season. My bet is he has another four months of breeding to go.

Any rate, you are right...as my son likes to say "it's possible!"
