Why does my boa go off feed this time of year

rottenweiler9 Oct 24, 2004 06:18 PM

My red tail is about two years old and a little over 4ft. I try to feed her every week, and for awhile she would eat every week. I had to put her in a box and leave the room and I would come back and it would be gone. But lately she has not been eating. I tried putting in back in her cage and in the box but no go.
She did this last year around this time and did not eat for I would say months, I want to say 4 months.
I know she is intrested in the food because when I put it in there she goes up to it, but then leaves it. I thaw it out and then put it in a plastic bag to warm it up. I try leaving in there, I try moving it.
I try giving her one large rat a week. Unless she eats that and its ok for a month or longer.

Any advise
Jeff

breeding season that is......Typically sexually mature boas will go off feed in search of.......LOVE. LOL not to worry, unless your snake is showing signs of being sick, or starts to drastically lose weight.

I agree, but a 2yr old.....? As long as there is not a big weight loss don't worry too much. Do check your temps though.

i Posted this same question earlier today.
My 2yo is doing the same thing. An otherwise good eater going off feed.
I pried him with pk rodents...against my better judgement...and he ate fine.
But he still wont touch the ft rats he once craved.
My Dumerils Boa is doing the same thing. I wont give in with a pk rat though. I'm holding out.
Everybody else is eating as though it were a last meal.
However..neither non-eater is going to be called too skinny any time soon, so I'll just wait them out.
Is it also a seasonal change as well as a breeding thing?

Ya, she use to eat FT right off the tongs, she was a better eater than my burm, until last year, and then now she is so picky and has to eat in a quite dark box. I just put a hide box in her cage, so hopfully she starts to eat again, but the temps and humidity are fine.
My Burm, Retic, and Ball all are eating fine. Is it Boa thing.

Temp and humidity are perfect...but the same story...would strike at the forceps...now will only eat in the dark
