bloated ball python

danya Oct 24, 2004 08:13 PM

my ball ate a gerbil the other week (it was the first food she would accept in about 7 weeks). She has yet to go to the bathroom, and she's got a massive bulge in her lower 3rd...
her cage is quite large and her heating is set up properly, hot end, cool end, under the tank heater on one side, etc... i know all about that.
We brought her to one vet who doesn't specialize in reptiles, but has helped us in the past, he says to soak her in warm water every day, but that was the first thing we started doing and it hasn't helped at all, he doesn't know what else to do for her. There is one other vet in the area that will deal with snakes, but his advice lead to the death of 2 of our reptiles already, he's a dog vet that considers himself able to diagnose reptiles he's never heard of. So we're basically out of luck to get help from a vet.

She just won't pass this gerbil!! it wasn't too big for her, in fact it was much smaller than what she's used to being fed. She's about 11 years old, and has ALWAYS been a finicky eatter, and never had a problem adjusting to food in her system again. Any one experience this before? Do you have any idea how long she will be able to live in this condition? We've been soaking her, trying not to handle her more than moving her for a soak... would a little vitamin e oil help?

As long as your snake is free of parasites, you should be fine. The bloatedness is not rock-hard is it? Most likely it will go soon. I have some that will go every week, and others that look like they are going to explode before they finally defecate.

If you think this is the only food in her, stop worrying. If it has just been a week or two, wait a month or two and then start worrying. Fecoliths are far rarer than paranoid keepers.
