I just bought 2 QUAILS! Anyone know how to feed a snake an egg?

I just bought 2 Coturnix/japanese quails today!

I wanted them for pets, eggs, and for fertilized eggs for my tegu & maybe corn snake.

Does anyone know how to feed a snake an egg? Do they eat it with the shell on? if so, should you make a hole in the shell so they can smell it?

Or do you hard boil the egg & feed it without the shell?

Also, is this even that safe for a corn snake? Will they regurgitate only the shell like that african egg-eating snake?

Black (and most other) rat snakes commonly eat eggs out of chicken houses. It is easy to digest...they suck it down and crush the shell and get the nutrients. Just think of it as an adult snake..."woah that was amazing. no claws, no teeth...just...awesome." eggs produce a fairly pungent smell just on their own...but most of their smell actually comes from the mother bird sitting on the egg. your snake will enjoy a bird as well...however im not sure on that particular type of bird.

But yes...as far as hard boiled eggs go...if a snake wants a good hard boiled egg, it ususally goes down to the "swallow and slither cafe" ....they should have one by there. They can cook a mean quail egg! lol im sorry...i couldnt resist.

You do run the risk of getting a specific corn "hooked" on them so that it refuses all other food items. It's not terribly likely, I would imagine, but it DOES happen with various food items.

However, the eggs as a food source are not a problem to introduce to corns in and of themselves. Just be prepared for the consequences of possible food "addictions" and REALLY smelly defecations!

Trust me on that last one....
