Is this a Normal or a Miami?

ljk825 May 15, 2003 09:19 AM

I recieved my corn as a hatchling in Jan '03. I was told by the purchaser it was a Miami Corn (pet store description). Then i was told it could be a normal. What is it? if you need a closer picture with better lighting, let me know and i will post again. thanks.

A miami is a normal with a certain variant of coloration. Normal cornsnakes vary widely in the amount of red, yellow, and black pigment per individual. A certain "look" is called "miami" because around the Miami, FLA, area, there have been found individual cornsnakes with a light grey groundcolor, but there are many variations even on the miami theme. Some "miamis" have a brownish ground color, and many darken with age.
Its entirely possible that your snake WAS born of miami parents, but is a bit differently colored than they were. It is also possible that it was born of other parentage, and had a "miami-phase" look when it was hatched.
Its not a bad looking snake, and I'd say it looks like it has miami influences.
Just My Opinion,

They are normals selected for a certain look they show, namely vibrant, intense color and strong black borders on the saddles.

Looks normal to me. Too young to be sure yet though.

Like Shaky said, Miami is a "phase" of normal corn but you probably already knew this. So, to answer your question....In my not so experienced opinion, I would say it sure likes a Miami to me. Granted I have only seen a couple of Miami's in person, the rest in pictures on the net or in books, but it looks like it has all of the "miami" characteristics to me.
Looks better then a few I have seen.

It seems to have quite a bit of orange on the head and neck. Good Miami phase hatchlings should have as little as possible.
