Cross breeding between different localities of the same subspecies...

jrbl Oct 25, 2004 12:56 AM

Hi,
I have a Northwestern Alligator Lizard(Elgaria coerulea principis) from Southwest Oregon. I have had him for five years, and I have not found a mate for him until now. A man is selling some, but they are from Washington. Would it be okay for me to get a female or two from him to breed with my male? jrbl

I don't think that it would be a problem. In the wild there are integrade zones where different subspecies interbreed so I don't think you'd have any problem breeding different localities of the same subspecies. Just make sure you have a plan in place for the babies.

If the man selling them is from washington make sure they are the same species. There is a Northern alligator lizard and a Southern alligator lizard. Both species are found in Washington, and if you got yours in southwestern Oregon chances are he's a Southern. They are a distinct and separate species from the Northern.
