What does MILDY VENOMOUS mean?

rugbyman2000 Oct 25, 2004 06:49 AM

I'm curious about learning more about "mildly venomous" snakes, and I figured you hognose buffs could give some great advice. So I have two questions for you.[p]

1. What is like to get bitten by a hognose or mildly venomous snake? Or can their rear fangs even reach a human?[p]

2. What other North American snakes besides the hognose are mildly venomous? [p]

Any takers? I sure would like to find out. Thanks.

Mildly venomous, IMO, is a venom that will not cause any sort of medically significant problems. Maybe a little local swelling or redness. The only bad hognose bite, and one of the few I have seen, was when some guy let a hognose chew on his hand. The bite obviously resulted from a feeding response. The hand swelled up for a few days. I have never seen a hognose bite out of aggression though. They will make mock, close-mouthed strikes, but that is it.

Some other mildly venomous would be snakes such as ringnecks and many other small terrestrial snakes from out west. Jury is still out on Thamnophis.

I think this might be the bite you are talking about. It has been posted before on this forum. Most people agree this is an atypical hognose bite.

That would be it. I would agree that it is probably quite atypical. He did, after all, allow the snake to chew on him for a good bit. I am curious though if that would be typical for a bite where the snake was allowed to sit and work its "rear fangs" in.
