Help.......my Garter Snake won't eat !

Vertabreaker666 Oct 25, 2004 08:04 AM

My son caught an absolutely amazing juvenile Garter Snake and would like to keep it, but I told him the only way you can keep it is if you can get it to eat right away. It has been a little
over a week now and nothing. We tried worms from the garden, various bugs, and even a feeder fish scented pinky.Still nothing!
Any help would be very much appreciated.

Thank you.

Where do you live? Is it possible the snake was getting ready to hibernate?

Do you know what kind of garter it is?

It may take up to 2 weeks for the snake even destresses enough and gets used to his new enviroment. It may even be an issue of temps if you keep your house cold enough. I dont think setting a time limit is as important as gauging how skinny the snake is compared to his head. A garter kept in a cold enviroment eating mice will eat very infrequently compared to a garter kept in a warm place being fed worms. There are alot of factors that needs to be considered.
