Terminology - looking for definitions...

Antegy Oct 25, 2004 01:59 PM

Hello,

I just found posted on a web site this summary of the differences between Lampropeltis and Elaphe:

http://www.reptileallsorts.com/lampropeltis/Elaphe.htm

It speaks of 'scale rows', 'upper labials', 'lower labials', 'temporals', etc.

I'm going to guess that those things in particular refer to counting scales - but I'm not sure. Do you know what these terms refer to. It would be great if there was somewhere online that I could find a picture that outlined the scales on a snake which showed what each one is called.

Any help on this would be great.

Thanks,
- Mark

The labial scales are the scales that line the mouth. I would Imagine the temporal has something to do with the head but I am sure someone will have the actual meaning for you.
