Terminology - looking for definitions...

Antegy Oct 25, 2004 02:00 PM

Hello,

I just found posted on a web site this summary of the differences between Lampropeltis and Elaphe:

http://www.reptileallsorts.com/lampropeltis/Elaphe.htm

It speaks of 'scale rows', 'upper labials', 'lower labials', 'temporals', etc.

I'm going to guess that those things in particular refer to counting scales - but I'm not sure. Do you know what these terms refer to. It would be great if there was somewhere online that I could find a picture that outlined the scales on a snake which showed what each one is called.

Any help on this would be great.

Thanks,
- Mark

Ok- I did a couple of searches on google. Here's a page that will help.
http://www.howe.k12.ok.us/~jimaskew/botzo/zosnake.htm
Scroll down a ways till you see the diagrams of the head and back scales.
In general- supra is upper, infra lower, sub is below, pre is before, post is behind, inter is between... and some scales are just called what they are based on their location on the body, like temporals or rostral scales. I had to pull out a couple of books to double check what I saw on the site (it doesn't identify all the scales). Check out the site, but check out some books too- they'll give you better illustrations. The glossary link under Care Sheets/FAQs/Features at the top of the page, under the Forum link, also defines some of the terms you may be looking for but seeing the pictures also helps.
