Is linolium ok?

bluebug32 Oct 25, 2004 03:04 PM

I've got a baby leo and switched substrates from a kind of mulch to thicker inolium squares (i've got a 10 gal. tank). But my gecko slides around a bit when he's chasing crickets (he's seems happy with it otherwise). I know it's not tile, but is this type of substrate ok?

yeah it is ok, if him sliding around bothers you, you could always feed him in a different tank.

thanks. I guess I'm just worried about any kind of chemicals they add to it. It definitely has a plastic smell (though I washed it first) and I want to be sure this isn't harming him.

It's recommended that you get a "grippable" kind of Linolium to prevent that slipping and sliding, but otherwise I haven't heard anything on Linolium interfering with a Gecko's lifestyle.

It should be fine if you washed it. Even tiles are processed with chemicals most likely but if you wash them it should be okay. As for the sliding, try roughing it up with some sandpaper to help him get better traction.

Beth,
I got this really funny visual of your leo going hell-bent-for-leather after a cricket and sliding around like a dog running into the kitchen.
Something you might try, especially if the plastic smell of those linoleum squares is very strong, is real tile - like slate. Most places will cut it for you to whatever your tank dimensions are and it really looks nice. It's about 3/8" thick so it takes a bit to warm up, but I think it holds the heat well and it has a little rougher surface to it. Looks and feels more natural I would imagine. Mine don't slide on it either.
Just a thought, Dean
