what should i use to waterproof my cages????

darcy Oct 25, 2004 04:35 PM

I'm making my new burm terrarium;and i could use advice on waterproofing. I was told i could use an exterior gloss paint and let it season but i wanted to know what other burm keepers use. The "cage" is 6'x2'x1'1/2" and made from 1/2"plywood.i know that the cage may seem small but i take him out every night from 6:30 till 10:00 and I only have a male burm and I don't plan on getting another. I could use any info on waterproofing the terrarium that is given.
thanks in advance.

Hey man I built my cage a while ago and got sick and tired of my guy peeing out the crack and on to the floor. I just got some outdoor clear silicone. Before everyone jumps down my throat about the fumes I kept him in a temp container for a few days til it aired out. It works great though. The one I got is good for everything but painting over.

First off you have to think of the floor as a shallow pan. No opening below about 2 inches above the floor. This will give you enough space to seal up and not have to worry about the urine seeping through. Paint the sides with about 3 coats of an exterior grade latex. Lay vinyl flooring on the bottom. Then use 100% silicone to seal all edges and seams. I have another cage which I sealed the wood floor. It is still to rough to clean with a paper towel. The vinyl wipes clean in a snap. Before making this floor, make sure you do not want belly heat. Trying to install it later is almost not worth it.

First off, you may want to consider the dimensions of your cage.
Seeing as you are using plywood, and plywood comes in a 4'x8' size, why not make the cage 8x2? Your burm wil thank you later.
Also, head over to the Cage Forum. Very educational.
There are many different type of finishes to use.
You'll find all the pros, and cons of each there.
Just make sure you seal all cracks with silicone, regardless of what finish you use.
