is cycling ball pythons really required for breeding ?

imridethelghtng Oct 25, 2004 04:38 PM

last year i had a male he was kinda small but figured i would give him a shot just to see what happened and i put him with my female without cycling them and the male attempted to mate with her right away continued to attempt mating with her for several weeks before he lost interest the female ovulated i found he laying upsidedown basking but didnt get any eggs last year so i just figured the male was too young so instead of moving him out of the cage i just left them caged comunnaly only seperating them for feeding well yesterday i cleaned cages put them back together without cycling and he was trying to mate with her again so my question is do ball pythons really need to be cycled or is cycling just used to improve the chances of getting a breeding response

How long do you think is long enough to bruminate ?
...male or female for that matter.
...and is it possible to miss a "window" with a female?

My only female of size to breed is at 2500 g and refusing food (last 5 trys) but the male is just shy of 600g and still eating great.

Is a rubber boa, and possibly rosy boas. I have found that brumation and boids don't mix.

You'll get MUCH better results with day/night cycling. Day time highs and night time lows. That's where its at.

6 weeks min. 10 weeks is plenty.

So min/6 weeks of cooling(night drops)before breeding attempts ? Nov1 to mid Dec then introduce, sound right?

Which sexs fertility is it that benefits greater during this time before breeding, the male or the female ?

I start to introduce after 3-4 weeks of cycling, all the way until the following June if need be.

Cycling seems to affect sperm production, and the act of courtship and copulation seems to affect egg production. But its still not known for sure. You can breed without temperature cycling. Wild caughts can cycle on their own circadian rhythm.

Ahhh so this other female i have(wc May 04)that is 1100g(and growing) may not cycle till May (if she does at all)...interesting.

Thanks for the help Jeff.
