Question for Randy, Conrad, or anyone with Beauty experience

crtoon83 Oct 25, 2004 09:57 PM

I had posted a question concerning feeding schedules for my snakes, and apparently it's okay to feed the N.American rat snakes weekly. I remember however, that Randy told me the beauties have a higher metabolism, so I was wondering would I be malnourishing my 4-5 month old blue beauty if I feed her weekly as well?

Thanks,
Chris

I think every 5 days would be fine for babies and juveniles because they really do have a high metabolism at that age. When you need to be judicious is when they reach the 4-5 ft mark because they do seem to slow down somewhat around that time. Adult Taiwans are very good at getting fat. I'd say feed them every 7-14 days at that point depending upon the size of the meal. Check the link below - they'll let you know when they've gone too long without a meal.

that looks like it hurt. lol. i've had my blue beauty for about 3 weeks now...and the handling process goes something like this. she tries to run, musks me, bites me, tries to run again, bites me, then usually stays still. then gets mad and musks and bites me again. lol. i have never gotten to hold her without gettin bitten yet. I'm just glad that shes still so small that it doesnt really hurt. She will grow out of this though...for the most part...right? lol.

I was going to make a little fun of you for getting a Blue Beauty instead of a nice, pretty, and FRIENDLY suboc after reading those last posts. Instead, I went to change the water in one of my suboc's cage, and sure enough he whacked me. First time ever.
I guess I got what I deserved.
Good Luck with that critter!

Feeding weekly is a very minimun for juvi beauties. I feed weekly when I'm trying to keep my young from outgrowing cages too fast, however, I usually feel bad and feed them a slightly larger meal, so it's six of one, and half dozen of the other...lol I wouldn't be giving them pinkies once a week, is what I'm getting at. My Blues are eating hoppers once a week, and my taiwans are eating med/large fuzzies once a week...my oldest blues hatched in July and range between 30-36" long now. Of course hatchlings from that clutch were 21" average, so a three footer less than six months old isn't unreasonable. Speaking of feedings, I just got done feeding all the little champs!

I gave him a medium/large fuzzy on Saturday...took it with no problem. he's a late july hatchling...and too active to measure but i'd guess 18-20 inches. I'm also trying to keep her from outgrowing her cage too fast...hoping it will give me some more time to get her tame enough to handle before she grows too large...lol.

In my experience with asain ratsnakes, they get calmer as they near adulthood. So maybe keeping them from growing up isn't the best idea. This has held true from everthing Asain I've worked with so far. Just my observation.
