How do you create a midnight blizzard?

TheDrew1 Oct 25, 2004 11:04 PM

I was just wondering what morphs of geckos do you need to breed together to get a midnight blizzard? What do they have to be het for? Also i just got a blizzard and a SHCT, isnt the blizzard gene recessive, so the offspring will be SHCT het for blizzard, right?

Thanks

That would be assuming that the "midnight" portion is a simple recessive trait... which I beleive it it not. I believe the midnight portion is actually line-bred, while blizzard is simple recessive.

Without buying a "midnight", you would have to get two blizzards (or start your own strain) and breed only the dark ones together over successive generations.

If you already had a midnight, same thing would apply, only the darkest one you would have for the first generation or two is the midnight you started with.

Either way, you're not going to get a really dark blizzard for numerous generations and breeding seasons... I'd guess 5 years with the first method and 3 with the second before you get anything really dark.

I'm looking for confirmation that midnight is line-bred... but it could even be somewhat temperature dependant... which opens up a whole new debate that I won't go into. Basically, does anyone know if it has been proven line-bred and not temperature based.

No, but that is going to be my project for the next couple of years. Im starting out with a semi-dark midnight blizzard and a normal.

But i asked about midnights a couple days back and someone mentions a garette or gary? He is supposidly producing some pretty dark ones and is holding them back for a couple years.

Here is my 2 cents on these.Midnight blizzards are a line breed leo. They are just very ugly blizzards that people put a cute name on and charge more money for them.If you want to get midnights then buy a 1.1 of blizzards and breed them, you will get ugly blizzards sooner or later then you have midnight blizzards.

I don't think Midnights are ugly at all and not all are just Ugly blizzards, some people are taking their drab blizzards and trying to sell them off because they are a little darker(probably stressed) and giving them a name. There are real midngihts out there. I am quite lucky enough to have an adult female that is black velvet and never changes. I unfortunately don't know her genetic background or what her parents looked like but or another note I have talked with Garrick and trust him when he says that he is starting to make a real impressive leap towards midnights with breeding his darkest blizzards over several generations now. Hopefully with my black female and a product of one of his darker males I will be on my way to starting the all black leo very soon.

I honestly think that the best "darker (black)" looking leopard gecko I've ever seen was a VERY VERY DARK patternless that was posted here, and on the other site I believe. These thing's were almost BLACK in color (unlike the dark gray blizzards that are being labeled midnights).

I wish I remembered who posted that pic, maybe they'd be able to do it again.

It was K & N that hatched the dark patternless.
