well today is day 40

jeune18 Oct 25, 2004 11:38 PM

after thinking that the little egg was deflating, he hardened back up and i have just been adding water and letting him sit in there. today was the 40th day since i dug it up. it could be up to day 44 since they were laid though. i guess i will find out soon enough if there really is a baby in there or not. i will be really mad if i have been taking care of a dud for so long

Mine hatched at right about 50 days and grew a lot towards the end. Fingers crossed.

I know that the chicken industry have some means to verify whether eggs are fertile or not.

They put an high light source on one side and they look on the other if they can see the distinctive life form.

Are lizard eggs too much thick to let pass light ?

As long as the egg has not turned a darker color, you can sometimes see the lizard inside, when candling the egg. Some use a strong penlight, to shine on them.

I think thats what JohnEEE uses????????

Sure hope ya have a live one Vonnie. But that egg should be noticiably BIGGER, it should have grown the whole time.

I was able to candle my eggs and see the babes inside. I used a small maglight. But be very careful that you put the egg back just as it was, with the same side up. One of my 2 surviving eggs was much smaller than the other, and I think if it had incubated a while longer it would have been a viable baby. I am not sure why it even hatched the same day as Hermes and wonder if he disturbed it. I wish I had been there, anyway. I hope your egg is growing! It's hard to see the change when you look at it every day. Sam was always the one to comment how big it had gotten because he is not here all the time. Just like now he sees Hermes and says "wow"! I see him every day and the change is not so shocking.
I recently got word that 4 of the collared we caught this past summer for friends have died. 2 were left in the sun by one of the children. Their daddy is just sick over it. He works nights and had put their cage outside under a tree where they had been all summer and went to bed. His daughter moved them into the sun for a better look before she left for school and his wife left for work without noticing. I guess this happened 6 weeks ago and he felt too bad to tell me. The other 2 died last week after some men came into the house to do some kind of work. I did not get the whole story but am assuming some kind of chemical or fumes got to them. It has made me paranoid enough to cover the cage when I am cleaning!

i am so terrible at judging the growth/length/distances of things that unless the egg grew 5 times its normal size i probably would not notice. i think it is bigger, but it is definitely bigger than some of the duds ivan laid earlier in the year. anyway i guess i will know soon enough. i am too afraid to candle it, i drink waaaaaaaay too much caffeine to have steady hands
