Lenore - Quantified

nevermore Oct 26, 2004 05:39 AM

Well, I just measured my eastern, Lenore, using that snake measuring program mentioned on the general snake forum and, accordingly, she is approximately 22.5 inches, 3 months, 13 days, 4 sheds, and 32 mice long…

Also, while the discussions on whether or not an Indigo or a King Snake would win in a conflict seems silly (we all know what the outcome would be), I have done some experiments on a far more serious and scientific questions.

Can an indigo, in fact, defeat……..

………..GODZILLA???

While I am biased, I have to grudgingly admit that the outcome is not as clear or definite as the indigo/king scenario.

just gorgeous...keep the photos coming!
33 mice! how many poops?

coolhl7 Oct 26, 2004 01:02 PM

the reason I asked about the poops is I just love my ETBs because they only poop every other month or so....I dont know if I could handle an adult Indigo...

Carmichael Oct 26, 2004 05:01 PM

Yes, I know what you mean. I have an adult colony of 9 eastern indigos plus four yearlings and a couple of holdback hatchlings so my "stink factor" is quite high at times. But if forces me to stay on top of maintaining a high level of hygiene and its worth the effort. If they only defecated like your ETB's or my arboreal tree vipers!! Rob

I don't know that I'm fully qualified to give a proper understanding of the copious nature of Indigo shat. I have one baby, so I don't have the same volume as a lot of the other posters on this forum. It definitely happens more often than any other snake I've owned in the past. But...I've probably matured a bit since the last time I owned a snake (when I was a boy) so it seems less like a chore and part of experience of keeping this awsome animal. Plus - I used to keep snakes in big, heavy, glass aquariums - heavy and dangerous to lug around and with those horrible corners and seems that you can never get fully clean. I keep Lenore, untill she gets bigger, in a plastic box - light as air and with rounded edges - and I use the spray and whipe magic that is Quat Plus. The cleaning takes about five-ten minutes and seems easy as all get out (but again, I have only one, young snake).

Also, though Lenore has calmed down and is no longer stressed by being handled (so I handle her quite a bit more) for the first couple months, the only time I handled her were brief moments before cleaning her cage (and putting her in her little container). So cleaning the cage had an incentive.

Nevermore:

Next time you take pics of Lenore can you post one of the container you have her in? Just trying to get ideas for what I should have on hand next year when Rob's youngins are available.

Hera ya go.

This first pic is of the outside of the enclosure. I just used a plastic box that I bought (from Office Max I think). If I recall right, the brand is Isis (that was the one recomended to me on the general snake board) and has a top that clips down. I cut out everything off of the top, except the outer frame. Rather than attach the screen to the top (I'm not the most handy guy) I just cut out an extra large portion of screen (plastic scree...as I've had snakes that rubbed the scales off of their noses with mettle screen) and put it over the cage, then clip the lid frame over it. The clamps on the side are Craftsman spring loaded clamps. I'm not sure if they are necessary, but they make me feel better.

Here is a pic of the interior of Lenore's cage. There are two hides (one at the cool end and one over the heate pad section of the cage). There's a water bowl big enough for her to submerge in (though I have never seen her do this). I use newspaper...cause it's easy and I don't have to worry about her eating substrate (when she's bigger and I get her real cage, I might try a more natural setup). The branch is a rubber molded branch I got from Petsmart and added later. Lenore thuroughly explores her cage after every cleaning and she would try climbingh up the walls and on the thermometers stuck to the wall. Rob suggested I put in a branch. The nice thing about the rubber branch (besides not worrying about pests) is that I can bend it in different shapes and offer different configurations (whether this is for Lenore's amusement or my own...I cannot say). It was a good suggestion as Lenore uses the branch quite a lot.

On a final note...I'm thinking of putting together a new plastic box cage and, this time, cutting out less of the lid as this setup lets all the humidity out pretty easily and I'm constantly misting.

Great Job! very nice design and it looks great; nicely done on a poor college student budget! Rob

Thanks Rob! College budget indeed. After buying Lenore I was reading to spend another chunk of money on an enclosure...and it didn't end up costing much of anything (a pleasent surprise). Of course, I'll have to be a more expensive cage later...but I'll be ready and saved up by then.

Thanks Nevermore:

It seems to be similar in equipment to what I have for my Ball Python right now. Being in Arizona I had a big humidity problem as well with the screentop. I took some of that new "cling to anything" plastic wrap and laid a couple sheets over most of the screen top and it has helped keep the humidity in.

I also have a humidifier in the cabinet under the tank with a feed going into the tank. It seems to help as well. It's next to a different tank in the picture.
