Question for FD breeders

cricketscritters Oct 26, 2004 10:11 AM

Hello everyone. I'm new to this forum, although I frequently post on other forums. I have a question for the frilled breeders out there. I have been breeding Bearded Dragons, Veiled Chameleons, Leopard Geckos, and a variety of snakes for the past few years. I have an unrelated pair of Frilled Dragons that I've had for over 3 years. Both are perfect & healthy in every way. I want to breed them in the upcoming season, but have no knowledge of the cooling process for them. Do I brumate them like my other lizards, or is there a different technique involved?

Check out Dana and Loren Pennebakers site, they have a care sheet that covers breeding.

Its been a while, but best I remeber is you cut off food for about a week, but continue to water. Then you cut off food and water for another 6 weeks I believe. Then you start to water again for a week, and start feeding and misting heavily.

At this point you should see activity. If during the process you notice more then a 15% weight loss in any particular animal, you should pull them, re-introduce water and food as if the 6 weeks was up.

Some people will continue to lightly feed, others dont. I think you want to drop temps approx 10-15 degrees. As I said its been 4-5 years since I produced frilleds, so I would really suggest reading a few care sheets to double check my info.

Once you bring them out, really hit them with the moisture. Sadly for most people its a hit or miss process. I personally never had reliable production with my colonies. However I am ready to give it another try, and hope to have better luck.

I think a large enclosure and misting system would be very benificial for production. Also a couple of males, extra females, ect this time should help increase production.

Ive also heard of alot of people haveing problems with eggs hatching. I luckily had about a 90% hatch rate, but still low production.

Good luck, I think waiting for the female to be 3 years, as you did, will help your chances.

Thank you Mickey. I called yesterday & spoke with your wife. You & I have actually met once. I purchased a female panther chameleon from you in Raleigh NC a few years ago. Do you have plans to attend the Greenville SC show this weekend? I'll be there.

Im not going to make it to SC myself, but my buddy Justin is makeing the drive. He will have a number of my animals, a ton of my supplies, and maybe some lizard king shirts if they get done in time.

Hope the info helped.

It's a long way from Nebraska. Is he bringing any frilleds? I think I'll add another female to mine.
