Are Burms and Indian Pythons related?

rugbyman2000 Oct 26, 2004 11:24 AM

My reptile rescue recently got a call for an 8 ft Indian Python. Having never handled one, I did some internet research and found pics of pythons called Indian Pythons, but they looked a lot like Burms and had a lot of Burm trates (color, adult size, diet, etc).

Are Indian Pythons and Burmese Pythons related, are they the same thing going by different names, or is it just a coincidance?

Thanks

This is a true Indian Python from India,Pakistan, and the island of Sri Lanka. There are 2 subspecies P.m.molurus the true Indian python that was seen for years with the snake charmers etc. The Burmese Python P.m.bivitatus from Thailand,Burma, etc. Rarely do you hear someone refer to them as Indian pythons but they are found in Nepal and I have at times heard them refered to in this context. The third subspecies P.m.pimbura was described from the island of Sri Lanka but is no longer valid.
