Good News and Bad News

jeanne May 15, 2003 09:41 AM

Good news is my baby leos are eating like crazy. It is so cute to watch them hunt down crickets. They ate mealworms too, Thank God they aren't picky.

Bad news is , one of my female Albino Fat Tails laid her first egg, but she laid it outside of the moist hide set up for her, so it dried out. It was very small anyway so I didn't think it would make it either way.

My question is, does anybody know why she would lay the egg outside the moist hide? Actually I have 2 moist hides set up, because I have the 2 females and 1 male in the same enclosure, so I put 2 in there just in case.

This was her first egg she has ever laid, I am really hoping it was just through inexperience, and that her next one or 2 will be laid in the hide boxes.

Any suggestions especially from experienced Fat Tail breeders would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thank You

my leo did the same thing with both of her clutches...don't know why. i lost both of them, the first clutch i stuck in the incubator and still lost them and the second one the egg was a bit hard/dried out and when i squeezed it (by mistake) it popped

i can't really offer any ideas but i just wanted to let you know that you're guys aren't the only one to do that.

One of my girls, Grumpy, did the same thing a few weeks ago. She chose to lay her eggs on the top level of the Reptile Den. Well they stuck, and I was unable to get them free to incubate. I’d suggest, if you have the space, to keep laying females by themselves. I’ve found they eat better and are less stressed in this situation. There is a good chance she didn’t feel comfortable around your other leos. I’ve seen geckos hold on to there eggs in a community situation, and as soon as they were separated from the others, they would lay the eggs. Best of luck with your hatchlings, I bet they are cool looking!

My female Fat Tail laid her second egg of the clutch, this time in the moist hide, it is very small and probably won't make it, but at least she is doing it right now.

Thanks for the replies
