Hognose Tail Comparison Question *PIC*

RMB Jun 29, 2003 01:48 PM

I took these rather bad photos of the yearling hognose "pair" that I just purchased. Again, the "male" measured around 15" and the "female" measured around 19" in total length.
I am wondering if some of the trained eyes can give me their opinion as to whether or not it looks like I do in fact have a pair. To avoid any bias I am wondering if you can tell me what the sex is on the left and the right (as opposed to my telling you what they are supposed to be).....
Thanks in advance,
Ryan

I suppose that since there is a large difference in total length of the snakes then it may not be easy to distinguish the sexes in the pic, because the tails both fill the frame equally giving no indication of total body length. The snake on the right is the supposed male (measuring 15.8" and the snake on the left is the supposed female (measuring 19.5".
Would it be better to attempt a side-by-side comparison or is this pic adequate?
Thanks

I believe it is pretty adequate, though a side by side could help for sure. And remember, actual body length of the snakes themselves really does not matter in some cases. All of my recent catches have put females shorter than males while most of my friends have put females larger than males.

hard to tell from those pics, but the snake on the left looks like a female and the one on the right like a male.

I would have to agree though it is somewhat hard to tell from the pics. In most of the hognose I keep that are over a foot the differences are pretty clear cut. But some are tricky, and probing always verifies. I have become pretty good at doing it in person though (never been wrong so far as probing has prooved). I would say that the one on the right appears to have the hemipenal bulge and the one on the left appears to be female. Andy

It's hard to tell. I purchased a trio of hognose last year and the females had long tails. I think that the they had long tails because they were older yet not fed properly. I had a hognose breeder come over to my house (Steve Brown) and he told me that they looked male to him. I thought they were male too. So I fed them a lot and they got bigger but the tails stayed the same length. I got eggs from both. It is usually real easy to tell but the ones I had were very hard to sex. My best guess would be the larger one is female.

The one on the left looks male to me.

The one on the right is the shorter snake (total length), and is supposed to be the male (they were sold as a pair). I guess I will know for sure when/if I have fertile eggs

without an accurate tip of tail to vent measurement to say male or female I would say those snakes are the same sex!!! 2.5 in to 3.5 in Id call female . 3.5 and over male.. you tell me !!
