Pics of New Giant Day Gecko Vivarium Posted

ctdkite Jun 29, 2003 02:04 PM

I have posted pictures of my new vivarium at: http://www.csicable.net/~cdodson/Geckoviv/Geckoviv.html

This is my first serious gecko viv and I mostly incorporated what I learned from my frog tanks. I thought some might find it interesting and would be interested in any feedback.

Wow, that is really a beauty! I am in the process of building a 49 gallon viquarium, and you gave me some great ideas for lighting and landscaping. What did you use for substrate?

Thanks for sharing the pics!

For substrate I used the clay aggregate from Black Jungle, a layer of screen, followed by the top soil. For the soil, I made my own mix from peat, "Jungle mix," and some stuff left over from another project. Some of the plants were kept in their containers with their original soil.

Thanks for the comments.

Are those all real plants or are they fake. The tank looks really nice. I have Giants and my tank seams sort of plane. What should I do to it.

I'm not sure if you are being serious, so, for the record, those are real plants.

Sorry if I offended you but I still would like to know some good ideas to set up my tank.

Thanks.

Oh no, I was not offended.

Quite frankly, with this tank, I incorporated much of what I have learned from dart frog hobbyists.

No offense to other reptile and amphibian hobbyists, but dart frog enthusiasts seem to be particularly interested in creating natural and aesthetically pleasing environments for their animals.

If you don't have darts or other frogs, take a look at the dart frog forum. Questions about plants, backgrounds, lighting, and the like seem to come up there more often than they do in the cage and habitat design forum.

Also, spend some time at the two Yahoo vivarium groups. There are many good ideas there.

Another way to look at it is this -- How can I create a home for my gecko that would capture the interest of my (mother/wife/girlfriend -- take a pick) who has no interest in any herp and still be right for the gecko? Or, how can it look so nice and interesting that my wife would allow it in the living room? I have to admit, this type of thing enters into my thinking.
